About the project – by Anthony Epes

“I have spent over a decade shooting cities at the most magical time of day: dawn. Millions of us live in cities around the world. They can be fast, chaotic and aggressive places. Sometimes, as we live our lives in these intense urban areas, we lose something: the ability to notice the beauty in our surroundings. I wanted to make people fall in love with their cities again.

“Seeing deserted streets at the magic hour of dawn can completely change the way we look at our city. Something truly amazing happens at this time of day. For a few brief moments, Mother Nature gives us a glimpse of the miraculous. An awe-inspiring light show while millions of people are still asleep. chaotic, aggressive places. Sometimes, as we live our lives in these intense urban areas, we lose something: the ability to notice the beauty in our surroundings. I wanted to make people fall in love with their cities again.

“I’ve dragged myself out of bed in the middle of the night hundreds of times, trying to capture that elusive moment when dawn breaks. Sometimes it lasts a few minutes; sometimes just a few seconds; and sometimes I get nothing at all.

I am really honoured to say that the London book has a foreword by the actor Stephen Fry.  Paris at Dawn is introduced by John Bird, founder of The Big Issue, who had the idea for this series on cities at dawn.”
