Andy Stanfield (verified owner) –
I went on this workshop this year (2019), and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I’m an enthusiastic novice who liked photography but had never taken it up. As a present, I attended a five day course with Anthony over five years ago, it was through the Guardian. I thoroughly enjoyed that but never had the time to take it forward. After five years of receiving Anthony’s wonderful emails advertising his trips to Cuba, Morocco, Hong Kong etc., when I saw he was going to Vietnam I jumped at the chance.
Regarding the workshop, firstly, Vietnam is the most wonderful place. Hanoi is amazing, buzzing, chaotic, frantic and a brilliant place to take photos. Ha Giang in the north is also incredible. Driving in the mountains, every time you turn a corner you are presented with another stunning vista that you can’t believe and have to stop to photograph. The photo opportunities just kept on coming, from landscapes to the various ethnic groups in the villages and markets. Everyone is friendly including at all the homestays we stayed at in the mountains, having a chance to learn more about Vietnam life.
Secondly, Anthony is a great teacher and a brilliant person to hang out with. The days were long to make the most of the light in the morning and the evenings but we were never forced to take ‘certain’ photos, we all could do want we wanted to do and Anthony was always on hand to offer advise and guidance. It was sometimes general advice to all of us but more often it was individual nuggets of information to help our own photography. When reviewing each person’s selected output at the end of the workshop it was amazing how different all our photos were. I would definitely recommended this workshop to photography enthusiasts at all levels.
Oh, and I never mentioned the food – the best ever!
