Hey Anthony, I think I may have to invest in a new tripod. I’m assuming this will be required in London Dawn session and the one I have is probably not the best. I’m going to be in London before and will have a chance to try them out. Recommendations for where you’d go to shop for kit? I won’t be at B&H for a few months!

      Hi Michelle

What model tripod do you have now? Calumet that I use is now Wex Photo in London.
Their address is 37-39 Commercial Road London, E1 1LF
There will be lots of tripods to play with.

    Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the great post. Like you I’m on my third tripod, and wouldn’t be without one. My current tripod is on the heavy side as I originally bought it to use with a FF camera, but have since moved to MFT, so will be looking for something lighter.

Thanks again for the great posts,
    Dudley Wood

      Hi Dudley

You are most welcome. I am glad you liked the post. Diana said I should write a technical post and that’s all I could come up with. I didn’t even mention models or brands. lol. I am not really into kit so much. But I do love it!

Nice Post. I’ve had many tripods, but the 2 quality ones, a Bogen and a Gitzo Carbon still work for me. On the height issue, I’m 6’4″ and that’s been an issue. And with the CF Gitzo Mountaineer, the 4th leg extension is as thin as a pencil, so I try to avoid extending it, and of course, the dreaded center column shake, kept it retracted. With flip screens, and Live view, today, we can compose like reflex cameras with waist level finders of the past.

I’m finding myself looking at reducing the weight of my Gitzo be using a smaller ball head for travel and hiking. I may even try to get a lighter rig altogether. I really stress that the quick release is the enabling gadget that makes using a tripod more practical. Frame and compose handheld even snap a few and review, than you know what you’re aiming for you can position the three legged monster and snap the camera on and make micro (ok Mili) adjustments and make the real photography you’re created in your mind.

    Happy shooting,
    C

Life would be unfair without the quick release. Better than sliced bread.
If you’re at the stage of Gitzo then I am not sure how much lighter you are going to get. At 6’4″ your options are fairly limited but I can understand you needing a Gitzo. At that height most other tripods, even carbon fiber, would be a chore to lug around.
      Thanks for you comment matey!
