LISBON It would be a Sintra to miss out on this place!!

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and there is a distinct feeling of history as you wander through the tiny cobbled alleyways, past ancient ruins, the white-domed cathedral and São Jorge Castle towers that are magically lit up at night.

The city’s buildings are unusual – many of them are painted in pastel colours or decorated with Portuguese Azulejos tiles dating back to the 13th century, from the time of the Moors.

Lisbon has a cinematic feel, encompassing seven hills which give incredible views over the bustling neighbourhoods and down towards the seafront.

You can feel the fading glory of this former empire power, weaving into its modern incarnation of being a centre of finance, arts and entrepreneurship.

In this mix of history is a modern, thriving city – with plenty of cool street art, galleries, funky cafés, innovative food and music wafting through the streets.

Lisbon brings so many captivating photo opportunities to life – old trams driving up and down the hilly streets, the pastel-coloured buildings, gothic enclaves and diverse neighbourhoods.

Each hilltop is dotted with terraces where we can shoot these epic views, then have drinks and watch the sunset over the city below.

Lisbon brings so many elements together that I love in a city. It has grit as well as beauty. Grandeur and vibrant street life. Derelict buildings in the harbour, pristine designer shops, elegant European squares, the grand and imposing Sé de Lisboa cathedral, the haunting sound of Fado music drifting out of cafés and the surreal new MAAT museum on the seafront.

Lisbon will give you the opportunity to do some fantastic street photography, capturing people in different neighbourhoods – the labyrinth of alleyways in Alfama, the buzz of Baixa, to the nightlight of Bairro Alto.

We’ll shoot the colourful buildings and do plenty of urban photography – creating our vision of the city at sunrise as well as the gentle beauty of an early summer’s evening.

This 6 day workshop will also take in the surreal and pretty coastal town of Sintra, home to vibrantly painted villas and palaces, surrounded by a beautiful pine forest. It’s an incredible contrast to the city with the ruins of a Moorish castle, whimsical buildings and the majesty of the mountains rising up behind the town.

Lisbon is a ravishing feast for the senses – alive with photo opportunities, fun and, of course, delicious local specialities such as fresh seafood, Franco no Churrasco (aka. piri-piri chicken), rich stews and, of course, their world famous custard tarts (Pastéis de Nata).

This workshop will transform the way you look at potential subjects, as well as your approach to composition and lighting, and grasp of technical camera skills.

This workshop is intensely practical, and includes dawn workshops, as well as afternoon and evening photo walks, street photography, trips to local neighbourhoods, demonstrations and regular reviewing and critiquing of your photos.

I always tailor my workshops to the experience of individual members of the group, ensuring every attendee receives a personalised experience and develops as a photographer, which is why I only take 6 people on the workshop.

And – these workshops are fun! After a long day of shooting we’ll hang out at a local place, have some drinks, discuss the day’s events, you can ask me questions, share your experiences – and we can eat something local and delicious. Everywhere I go I always seek out the local and delicious!

I love the group atmosphere of these workshops – creative people hanging out together and looking to create amazing images. It’s really an incredible experience.

What level photographer do I need to be?

I keep my workshops small so that I can adapt a range of levels in my groups. Beginner or advanced, it doesn’t matter. All you need is a passion for exploring, a curiosity about getting under the skin of the place we are in and a desire to learn!
