Description
The Photographer’s Manifesto. It’s based around two super simple concepts, but it’ll take a while to read, mull over and put into practise. I recommend reading it through then coming back to it every week or two until you feel you have fully put into practise my ideas.
Many of my students like to keep it hand to refer to every time inspiration runs dry or you feel yourself being pulled back to your old ways of taking photos. Photography is a lifelong creative journey for us all – I am always learning new things and that’s the thrilling part. Photography will keep your mind fresh, enraptured with the world and full of passion if you let it draw you into it’s wonderful creative force.
As the very brilliant Ernst Haas said:
“Don’t park. Highways will get you there, but I tell you, don’t ever try to arrive. Arrival is the death of inspiration.”
From the Creative Photographer’s Manifesto:
Our photographs have the potential to open up the mind’s eye of our viewer.
We can transform the way viewers think of a people, a situation, a place.
We can introduce them to the heart breaking beauty of the world – right here on our doorstep.
We can teach people with our work to see, truly see the world, and to take more pleasure from it in each and every moment.
The only tangible thing we have in this world is what is right here: the sunlight on the tree outside our window in the morning; the soft pale light from the side lamp falling over the face of the child deeply asleep; the blinking, glowing lights reflected in the rain, as we walk through a crowd in the depths of winter. Ok so I’ve read it properly now. You realise this is mindfulness for photographers?! I printed out this document and gave it to my other half and said read it, this is what makes me happy, this is what makes me grumpy. I think the word ‘COMMIT’ is going to be an earworm for a while. Thanks Anthony I wish I’d read this straight away. Tom
Dear Anthony and Diana I ‘m 47. Teacher. Mother of three and have decided to start learning to take photos… the reason why I have decided to learn it is surprisingly (for me) word by word explained in your Manifesto… I have decided to learn photography so that I start noticing as many moments in my life as I can and so that I always have a reason to get up and go – somewhere, anywhere… just go and finally see things… …and thank you… thank you… for “telling” me it is a good idea… and that it does has that deeper sense to learn it.
